Fire Presentation

We had a wonderful fire presentation today. We learned all about what to do if there is a fire in your home. This is what we learned:

1. If there is smoke because of a fire in your house, get low and crawl to safety.
2. Never hide. The Firefighters need to find you quickly.
3. If your clothes catch fire make sure you STOP, DROP AND ROLL.
4. Practice fire safety at home. Know all your exits.

After the presentation the red class worked in groups to create a poster of everything they learned from the presentation. We had friends draw pictures of their family crawling under the smoke and out of their house. We had some friends make fire trucks and firefighters. Many friends made a fire and drew the smoke up above it.

French is Fun!

We have been learning all about our letters, numbers, days of the week and the months of the year in French. Take a look at some of the games we've played.

Alphabet Go Fish

Each friend got to take 3 letters in their hands. When it was their turn they had to ask one friend if they had a certain letter. The rule of the game was that they had to ask for the letter in French.

Candy Land

We played the board game using letters. The students had to flip over a card and read the letter in French. If they got the letter correct they could move their playing piece to the correct colour space on the board. If they had trouble, another student would help them out.

Creating Letters

The students were building letters using wooden sticks. They were asked to make "majuscule" (upper case) and "minuscule" (lowercase) letters. While our students were building the letters we observed many students saying the letters in French.

Roll and Build

The students were practicing counting numbers in French. They had to count the dots on the dice then build a tower using the same amount in cubes. Some students decided to have a partner and race each other. The first friend to build all their towers won the game.

Sink or Float

Last week Max and Emmett made a ship out of Lego pieces. They decided that they wanted to see if their ship would sink or float in water. This sparked a lot of interest with their classmates. We brought in different materials to experiment with. We asked the students to make a prediction for each item. Will it sink or float? We began talking about which materials would always sink and which would float. We found out that metal sinks and plastic items float. We also learned that heavy items may sink and light items may float.

Since our sink or float inquiry started with two friends making a ship we decided to bring in different materials for everyone to build their own boat. We learned from this experiment that tin foil, styrofoam and foam pieces float and cardboard will absorb water and start to sink.

Fun with Mittens!

Our red ladybugs have been having tons of fun retelling the story of The Mitten. See if your child can answer some questions about the book.

1. How many animals went inside the mitten?
2. Which animal was the first to go inside the mitten?
3. What happened to the bears nose?

Take a look at what else we've been up to:

How many animals fit in your mitten?

How tall are you (using mittens)?

We are making a pair of mittens that are symmetrical.
