Graphing Continued

Here is our class graph: How many people are in your family?

We gave each student a paper plate to draw each member in their family. We then organized all of our information into a picto graph.

Please copy and paste the link below into your URL. The link will bring you to a site called Fotobable. This is where you will be able to listen to the green class explaining our graph results.

Follow the link below to listen to Lauren's explanation on why there are no families beside the number one.

Here is our second class graph: How many letters are in your name?

Listen to our students in the red class explain the graph.

We have been encouraging our students to create their own graphs. They have to come up with a question they would like to ask their friends. Here are a few samples.

Dramatic Play Centre

We decided as a class that we wanted to change our Dramatic Play Centre. The students were asked to come up with a few ideas where we could still incorporate Canadian coins in some way. Here are their ideas:

Then we narrowed down our choices to three. Each student had a chance to make a vote. Here are our results:

THE BAKERY WON!!!

The red and green class then had to come up with what materials they wanted to see in their Bakery.

Take a look at some future bakers in the making....

Graphing in Kindergarten

Some of our students became interested in measuring their friends. They decided to use our classroom links to measure how big our heads their heads were and how tall they are. This sparked an idea to introduce graphing. The students will learn how to record their findings.

We will be introducing a question each day that the students have to answer on our graph.

After everyone has had a chance to answer the question we calculate all of our data and review our findings.

Coin Grab Graph

The students are still interested in learning about our Canadian coins. We've decided to incorporate our money into a bar graph. Each student was given a specific coin to graph. We would take turns grabbing a handful of money out of a money bag and then sort each coin. They would have to count how many coins they had and then take that amount of unifix cubes and place them on our graph. Once the bag was empty we would calculate each coin to see which coin we had the most of and which we had the least of.

In class we watched a story called Square Cat by Elizabeth Schoonmaker on YouTube. The students were then given a question, "Would you rather be a square cat or a circle cat?"

Once the students had decided on which shape they would rather be we asked them to go create their own cat using the shape they chose. We decided to use the website fotobabble to gather some recordings of our students explaining why they chose their shape. Follow the links to listen.
