Goodbye Kindergartens!

We hope you all have a fantastic Summer! It has been such a pleasure teaching each and everyone of you. We can't wait to see you in September! For those of you who are leaving SMY, we wish you the best of luck at your new school.

Ray's Reptiles

Today we had Ray's Reptiles come and share their amazing reptiles with us. We got to see a torentulas, snakes, a gecko, a chuckwalla, a bearded dragon and many more. We were even lucky enough to hold and touch some reptiles. 

Exciting News!

Two weeks ago we brought a caterpillar into our classroom to watch him change into a butterfly or moth. Many students made surveys asking each other whether they thought our caterpillar would turn into a moth or butterfly. We learned that if the caterpillar turns into a moth then it makes a cocoon. If the caterpillar turns into a butterfly then it makes a chrysalis. 

On Monday, while looking to see if there were any changes, we discovered that our caterpillar had turned into a moth!

We decided that we needed to let the moth go.

Farm Trip

Thank you to all the amazing parent volunteers who helped us get through our rainy field trip on Monday. We couldn't have done it without you!

The highlight of the day was feeding the catfish.

Making a Pulley

On Monday, some students were trying to make a pulley outside on the yard using skipping ropes and the play structure. During centre time we showed a few students who were interested, a YouTube video on what a pulley is. This sparked an interest in making a pulley in our classroom. We decided to use a table, a rope, large Lego pieces, tape and a bucket. 

We quickly learned that Lego was not the best material to use.

"It's not strong enough, the Lego keeps breaking" - Joshua

Our second idea was to use tape along the top.

Our pulley broke very quickly! We needed to collaborate together and come up with a better solution. We decided as a group that we shouldn't use Lego and that we need a stronger material. Blocks was our next choice.

We did it! By using the blocks we created a strong pulley using classroom materials. The students are having a great time seeing how much they can pull using their pulley. Way to go Red Class!

What is God's purpose for us?

Mrs. D, our religion teacher has been talking to the red class about what they think God's purpose for them is. This is what some of them believe:

Our Classroom Visitor

Yesterday Alexis found a caterpillar outside and asked if we could bring it into our classroom. We said, "YES!" We asked the students what they think a caterpillar needs to survive. We decided to grab a container and put some holes in the lid so the caterpillar can breathe. During outdoor play some of the students gathered leaves and twigs to put inside the container. We watched a video that showed us that caterpillars like to eat leaves and form their chrysalis on twigs. 

This morning when the students came inside they went straight to look at our caterpillar. We couldn't find the caterpillar! Many of the students had the same question, "Where did our caterpillar go?" We became detectives today! We took out some magnifying glasses to take a closer look. 

Some of our friends had their own thoughts about what had happened.

"Maybe it turned into a chrysalis" - Charlotte

"It think it got on the ground and went outside" - Justin

"How could it do that with the lid on it?" - Guiliana

"It could have went in the holes" - Senna

"I think the caterpillar is camouflaged" - Senna

"I think someone in EDP took him out" - Ryan

We found the caterpillar!

We found the caterpillar between two leaves. It looks like it might be forming a chrysalis.
